Teradici + Nerdio Optimize Flexibility and Cost in Microsoft AVD Deployments

Written by HP Teradici | January 18, 2022

Companies of all sizes and industries have no doubt felt the impact of the past few years’ remote work needs as they sought to create a secure and productive work environment. Change is occurring at a breakneck pace, requiring strategic and sometimes innovative thinking when it comes to implementing new solutions and replacing the old.

While vendors across the IT ecosystem have addressed industry-specific considerations and brought tailored solutions to market, many organizations struggle when weighing the unique needs of each department and finding one solution that fits them all. The computing needs of staff members can vary greatly, and finding a way to efficiently meet the needs of the whole team can be quite challenging for IT decision makers.

We’ve collaborated with Nerdio to help IT teams meet the needs of different roles and workloads, and manage a variety of different devices at scale.

Nerdio has enabled PCoIP® technology in Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) deployments managed with Nerdio Manager for Enterprise. This integration extends Microsoft’s flexible Azure platform with the performance and security of the Teradici PCoIP remote display protocol. Let’s take a closer look at how Nerdio and Teradici fit together to offer flexible AVD deployments, opportunities for cost savings and share a quick demo.

Flexible Azure Deployments

Microsoft’s AVD service gives remote users a secure, productive personal computing experience from the cloud. It’s useful for many roles that use office productivity applications and includes features such as the ability to manage multi-session virtual machines and deliver applications as-a-service to customers and business partners, not just employees.

To enable a broader set of user types, a mixed deployment of PCoIP and RDP hosts is possible. Do you have an existing AVD deployment today, but you want to enable users with graphics-intensive applications to work remotely too? Teradici CAS helps you enable remote productivity for those power users working across multiple displays and full frame-rate 3D graphics. PCoIP Ultra® performance enhancements are optimized for truly lossless support with bit-exact color accuracy and preservation of content detail, vital in many industries such as media and entertainment, architecture, engineering and construction, manufacturing and design.

Standing up AVD and CAS Manager independently can be a fairly big task for IT admins because of the unique pre-requisitions and overhead of each. However, organizations are more commonly looking to deploy both as they cater virtual desktop experiences for different types of workers and the different kind of computing needs their roles may require. Differences in use cases vary by the amount of computing and storage needed, the type of device (ex. creative teams may lean more toward Macs), the type of worker (ex. contractors vs full time employees) and whether or not the worker needs an individual workstation or could benefit from a GPU-enabled machine.

Managing this mixed deployment is easy now that Nerdio Manager for Enterprise enables PCoIP in Azure deployments. Nerdio can offload a lot of the complexity while also bringing a ton of extra value adds like cost savings on storage and compute and powerful automation of time-intensive tasks like image and host pool management.

Watch this video to see how host pools created in NME in AVD can also be automatically created and maintained in CAS Manager, allowing users the option of connecting to the AVD desktops using either RDP (through AVD service) or PCoIP (through CAS Manager).
