2017 is the year that the Cloud becomes mainstream. It has been estimated that 92% of global data center traffic will come from the cloud by 2020, and yet already we see the cloud becoming the “new normal” when it comes to IT infrastructure.

For the past two years, we have seen forward-thinking organizations go all in on the cloud, while others have adopted an approach that embraces the cloud for only new IT investments. Based on the growing pressures and opportunities of the cloud, we offer the following predictions...

Organizations Will Adopt Cloud-Based Virtual Workspaces to Improve Data Security

Right now, organizations are struggling to manage multiple attack surfaces – on-premises data centers, networks and a myriad of endpoints which both store and access corporate data.

A cloud-centric strategy will centralize data, making it easier to protect. PCoIP technology, which transmits encrypted pixels instead of data, eliminates the myriad of internal and external threats associated with endpoint devices.

Hybrid Cloud Will Grow

Although the case can be made for private or hybrid cloud deployments, many experts believe both are simply a ‘path’ toward a public cloud deployment. In 2017, we expect to see continued rapid growth in hybrid cloud deployments with the move to public cloud shifting over the next few years.

Organizations Will Demand Cloud Customization

Not a one-size-fits-all approach. Cookie cutter cloud offerings no longer cut it, and we’re seeing the proof of that with more options than ever for creating a highly-customized cloud solution to reflect each organization’s specific needs.

Our own Cloud Access Platform is a response to this trend, offering a set of building blocks and standard APIs and SDKs to architect and deliver a robust and customized cloud solution on Windows or Linux.

High-End Graphics Users Will Disprove Poor Performance Assumptions

Cloud-hosted workspaces have had the reputation for delivering poor user experiences to demanding power users of graphically intensive applications. In the past two years, major advances have been made and the tide of opinion is turning. Users are raving about technology advances such as the recent AWS Graphics WorkSpaces Bundle, Microsoft’s Azure N-Series, both enable users to access their powerful workstations using PCoIP technology from a broad range of endpoint devices including ultra-secure PCoIP Zero Clients. These advances make it possible to deploy a rich user experience on lightweight hardware, even for high-end graphics users.

Our technology has been put to test by some of the most demanding of users such as Industrial Light & Magic, a Lucasfilm Ltd. division, for Star Wars: The Force AwakensScanline’s VFX team for Independence Day: Resurgence; and Sony Pictures Imageworks for the new Ghostbusters movie.

While working on Independence Day: Resurgence, VFX/DFX supervisor, Mohsen Mousavi joked that it took him almost 6 months before he discovered his personal PC machine was not actually in Vancouver. With two 2K monitors on his desk, “I just did not know the machine wasn't there – you see, no lag.” Source: fxguide.com

Getting to the Cloud Will Become Easier.

One of the biggest deterrents for organizations in adopting cloud workspaces has been a painful migration process. Organizations with custom or legacy applications struggled to re-engineer their applications for the cloud; or only go ‘part way’ due to complexity and cost. Now, with the availability of solutions like our own Cloud Access Software, organizations can migrate seamlessly to the cloud without costly re-writes.
