Facebook chose PCoIP solutions to ensure reliable and scalable remote desktops

What if every employee, contractor, and vendor could log in to the same desktop environment regardless of their physical location? And every desktop was secure, compliant, and scalable with little effort?

That was the vision Oscar Cwajbaum had for operations at Facebook. As Manager & Technical Lead for the organization, he helped Facebook achieve the vision by leading the global deployment of Amazon WorkSpaces powered by Teradici PCoIP technology.

Onstage at re:Invent, Cwajbaum outlines how PCoIP helps Facebook achieve their vision. Watch his full presentation below...

Driving factors behind this vision

Oscar explained Facebook’s extensive requirements during his presentation at re:Invent:

24x7x365 Compliance and Security:
Protecting data when operational work is outsourced or accessed from any location in the world; and compliance is fully managed by Facebook, not its partners.

Scalability:
Onboarding partners globally while maintaining a consistent work experience; easily managing deployed hardware and software from afar.

Performance:
Giving geographically-dispersed employees and vendor partners the best possible computing experience to work efficiently.

How Teradici PCoIP Solutions helped Facebook achieve this vision

Integrated into Amazon WorkSpaces, the PCoIP protocol is helping remotely visualize desktops securely. Facebook staff connect to these virtual desktops from any location using PCoIP Zero Clients – ultra-secure desktop clients that are easily managed and monitored by IT using PCoIP Management Console.

Amazon WorkSpaces and these additional Teradici PCoIP solutions offered Facebook an easy way to deploy virtual desktops – they could reduce OS variance to one, and keep data securely stored in AWS. Small in physical size and with no local storage, these low-cost zero clients made it easy to deploy and connect employees to data and applications hosted in the cloud.

They also offered the experience (and often better performance) of a local computer. But behind-the-scenes, PCoIP technology (as built in to the zero client) is only transferring display information in the form of pixels. Business information and applications remain secure in AWS and never leave – ensuring security and compliance. With Teradici’s powerful hardware decode capabilities, PCoIP Zero Clients provide high resolution and full frame rate visualization even over high-latency networks, and enables secure access to applications and data.

Unlike other hardware options such as laptops loaded with a Windows or Mac OS, PCoIP Zero Clients offer uniformity in hardware and software – no operating system, driver, or anti-virus software is used, making it easier for IT to administer and manage. Gone are the constant patch updates and variances in laptop configurations that are expensive and time-consuming to maintain.

Enable Your Remote Workforce With Cloud Access Software

Sounds simple for users, but what about maintenance?

PCoIP Management Console keeps it simple for IT to manage and quickly provision PCoIP Zero Clients. With just one dashboard, IT administrators can report on inventory, configure settings, and push firmware updates to thousands of PCoIP Zero Clients rapidly at any hour.

Amazon WorkSpaces, PCoIP Zero Clients and Management Console work seamlessly together and simplify how employees and IT administrators connect and get work done at Facebook.

(Tip – if you recently purchased a PCoIP Zero Client of any OEM brand, you can register for one year of Desktop Access for free, which includes use of PCoIP Management Console)
